When the road to success in one’s own country is arduous, it certainly needs an uncanny ability, confidence and determination to create name, fame and fortune in an alien land. Mr Thumbay Moideen possesses all these qualities in abundance, making him one of the few Mangaloreans to successfully establish a burgeoning business empire in the Middle East, under Thumbay Group UAE, which is slowly spreading its tentacles in other Asian and African countries. If the name Thumbay rings a bell, yes, Moideen is the third generation entrepreneur from the family of Yenepoya, a leading business house of Mangalore. He is grandson of well-known businessman Yenepoya Moideen, founder of Yenepoya Group and son of the Ahamed Hajee Mohiudeen, founder of B A Group of industries.
BUSINESS BY CHOICE
“I am into business by choice and enjoy doing it”, says a confident Moideen who has inherited the business acumen of his grandfather and father but has demonstrated his own capabilities by successfully building a vast business empire in UAE having business interests in diverse fields such as timber, real estate, education, information technology, medical education, health care, consultancy, shipping and imports and exports. In the recent years his business activity has expanded to encompass a series of medical centres and pharmacies in and around UAE. Moideen has now set the goal to be a leader in the field of healthcare by 2010. Humility is what sets him apart from the rest of the pack in the business field and like a true leader who leads from the front this workaholic gentleman is a source of inspiration and role model to his 1000 odd employees.

Hailing from a well known business family of Thumbay, Moideen did his school and college in St Aloysius College in Mangalore. From an early age he was exposed to the rudiments of business and naturally was drawn towards the challenging and fascinating world of business at a tender age of 21. With business running in his veins he lost no time in demonstrating his business acuity and under his dynamic and capable guidance the business rose to greater height in a short span of time.
Moideen is modest about his achievements and attributes his success to “our long standing focus of innovation, planned diversification and our comprehensive expertise in all aspects of the industry”. He does not deny the fact that hard work has played a major and decisive role in taking his group to the pinnacle of glory in a short span of time.
MANY FIRSTS TO THE CREDIT
Having worked with his father for 20 years doing various businesses such as timber, real estate import and export, Moideen was driven by the desire to face business challenges in a foreign terrain like UAE. Having equipped himself with necessary experience, expertise, insight, conviction, courage and confidence to strike it big in UAE, he took the bold step of establishing the Thumbay Group UAE in 1998, which paved the way for the first private medical college in UAE, known as Gulf Medical College Ajman. Since the Thumbay Group UAE has developed into a conglomerate having multifarious business activities and operations spread across the globe. The Thumbay Group UAE today encompasses Gulf Medical College, GMC Hospital and Research Centre, Gulf Medical Centre & GMC Pharmacy in Dubai. The group also owns and runs international chain of health clubs and international chain of Coffee Shoppe.

By setting up GMC Hospital and Research Centre, a 250-bed facility, the Thumbay Group UAE also has the distinction of being the first private Teaching Hospital in the UAE, which is alsothe largest healthcare provider in the region. Another feather in the cap of Thumbay Group is that that Gulf Medical University is also the first private Medical University in the UAE. So many firsts to the credit of his group only exemplifies the vision, foresight, dedication and hard work of Mr Moideen who strictly adheres to a regimen of discipline and also expects the same from his staff.
“I am a workaholic and very focused which are both my strengths and weaknesses. I owe my success to the grace of god, to the support of government and to my committed team. I am easily put off by hypocrites”, is his modest response when asked to comment on his success.
TOWARDS A GLOBAL EMPIRE
At 52, his thirst for achieving greater heights of glory in the days to come is very much palpable in his words and deeds. “Whatever we have achieved so far (by the grace of God) is only the beginning of our bigger dream” he says which only goes to demonstrate that his group is going on a large but planned expansion with vengeance. “We have very big and ambitious plans and we are working hard on it and praying to succeed”, is his guarded response. Armed with a determined approach Mr Moideen is all set to open branches in Malaysia and Egypt to begin with. GMC will shortly be operational in Malawi, Africa and other African countries apart from India and Malaysia. The group is also keen to undertake franchise business in the gulf region in order to open up chains of food outlets, garment accessories, healthcare and medical projects.
While the sense of contentment differs from person to person and place to place Mr Moideen seems to be a contented man who has set challenging goals to himself and is bent upon attaining them, come what may. He certainly has no regrets in life. With his grand father Mr Yenepoya Moideen being his role model and inspiration, Mr Moideen is sure to create more waves with a flurry of innovative business activities and ventures that is sure to vault him to a position of eminence in the years to come.

Despite attaining success at a young age his philosophy of life remains unchanged. When asked to describe himself in a sentence he says “I am a hard working, god fearing man very committed to my job and to my family”. He is married to Zohra Moideen, an accomplished artiste in her own rights. With their two sons Akbar and Akram the family is settled in Ajman UAE. Though Thumbay Group UAE no connection with the business in India, the family is in touch with its roots in Mangalore.
